July 18, 2007 Saving Feds Money Everyday!

Dear {{user('firstname')}},

It's summertime, and the livin' is easy, as the old song goes. But have you been wondering if the living could be a little easier? Perhaps it's time to consider a job change!

If you'd like to research making the move to another Federal job, resources abound - and a few very valuable ones are listed below. Maybe you need to brush up on your interview skills, or maybe you just need to know where the jobs are, how to be alerted when new ones are posted and how much they pay. You'll find all that and more in the links in this month's FedSave Files.

Feel free to share your copy of FedSave Files with a friend or colleague, so they can also enjoy the valuable information and savings. (And have a safe and wonderful summer!)

Sincerely,
The FedSave Staff

How Much Can I Make?…
Before you dust off your resume and update it for the first time in years, and before you go out and buy a new suit so you'll be dressed to impress when you interview, make sure a change is really right for you. If the need for a bigger salary is the main part of your reason for considering a job change, take a look at the "2007 Salary Tables and Related Information" resource on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) website for an idea of what to expect.

Federal Job Boards - and More…
The Federal Government's official employment site, www.usajobs.gov, is more than just a job board. The website's "Info Center" contains advice and tips on writing resumes, a Career Interest Center, interviewing tips, and even a tutorial on how to get the most out of the USAJOBS website!

The "Info Center" is located at http://www.usajobs.gov/infocenter/.

Once you've developed your resume and decided what career path to pursue, "My USAJOBS" is another USAJOBS resource you'll want to try. "My USAJOBS" can help you track new jobs via automated alerts, apply for jobs online, and even host your resume so that job recruiters can contact you!

To sign up for this service, visit http://www.usajobs.gov/ and click the "My USAJOBS" tab at the top of the page.

There are over 35,000 Federal jobs in the USAJOBS database - one could be the right job for you!

Commercial Job Boards
With several thousand Federal jobs available, it may be worthwhile to look at other job boards for leads. The following commercial (non-government) websites may be helpful in your job search:

  1. The Federal Jobs Digest (http://www.jobsfed.com/) allows users to search jobs by a number of parameters: location, occupation - even jobs that don't require experience. It also features a resume-writing service and "Job Coaching" (http://www.jobsfed.com/matching.htm) to help you match your experience and background to Federal jobs that may have confusing titles, but might just fit you to a "T."
  2. The Government Job Search website (http://www.federaljobsearch.com/) also allows searching by state or by career field, and boasts over 49,000 Federal jobs in its database.
  3. The FederalJobs.net Career Center (http://www.federaljobs.net) features federal jobs, postal jobs, student jobs, law enforcement jobs, overseas jobs and more, plus a handy "Job Hunters Checklist" to help you job-hunt more effectively.
  4. FedJobs.com (http://www.fedjobs.com/) also features a database with over 30,000 federal jobs, but has additional valuable resources available to the site's paid subscribers.
All of the above websites are valuable resources in themselves, and each is a little different from the others. Visit several of them to make the most of the services they offer.

Happy hunting - and good luck!
